SMU IT Audit SIG was formed to create the awareness of IT Auditing to students. Auditing has been commonly been perceived as Financial Auditing. However, in reality, financial audits are just one of the many possible audits that organisations have in placed. In IT Auditing, we examine the controls of IT; namely its integrity, confidentiality, reliability and sometimes efficiency.
- Would information be accessible to unauthorised users?
- Would information extracted from the system (i.e. through reports) be accurate and up-to-date?
- Would the IT systems be available when users need to use it?
As more organisations are heavily depending on IT, many of them are starting to see an importance of having IT Audit. If IT collapses in an organisation, there is a great chance that the latter collapses too. As organisations start to see the potential risks when using IT, so does the rise of the importance of IT Auditing.
In the academic year of 2009/10, SMU IT Audit SIG aims to start a partnership with ISACA, a professional association for IT Auditing (who also awards the CISA professional certification). Through this partnership, we hope to bring the industry closer to the school. More networking, internship and career opportunities may also be seen.
